GoBike November cycle ride, Sunday 06 November

A relatively short ride, 18 miles with next to no hills, and travelling over an award-winning bridge!

To celebrate the opening of the new Stockingfield Bridge over the Forth & Clyde Canal in Maryhill, which was due to open in September, we will have a tour of the areas around the canal, including the Claypits Nature Reserve and Ruchill, before using the bridge. We will then head to Clydebank along the towpath, to view the Titan Crane, then return into Glasgow along the Loch Lomond cycle path, ending up at Kelvingrove.
18 miles, largely on the flat – so what’s not to like?

We meet at 10:00 hours at the north end of Bell’s Bridge, at the SEC in Glasgow

It’s worth noting that :

The Stockingfield Bridge project has won the 2022 ICE People’s Choice Award.

The annual award, from the Institution of Civil Engineers, recognises civil engineering projects that have made a positive impact on their local communities.

The £14m two-way spanning, cable-stayed pedestrian and cycling bridge at Stockingfield project took 21 months to complete.

It connects communities on either side of the Forth & Clyde Canal for the first time since 1790.

Sunday 02 October, cycle to Baldernock (where’s that?)

Baldernock Loop

Join us on Sunday and find out just where it is, and think back to the days of campaigning for the Bears Way!

This ride will head out into the countryside to the north of Glasgow, heading out via Woodside, Possilpark and Bishopbriggs to reach the canal at Cadder, before crossing the River Kelvin to Balmore. From Baldernock, we will continue to Milngavie, and ride the Bears Way path to Hillfoot. After that, we will continue on a mix of major and minor roads to reach the Garscube Estate and Forth & Clyde Canal around lunchtime.


20 miles, one unsealed path, some climbing in the Baldernock area, mostly on road, including Milngavie Road at the end of the Bears Way.

First GoBike ride of the autumn, Sunday 04 September, to Waterfoot and Thorntonhall.

Yes, it will be September tomorrow, but let’s hope this good weather lasts until the weekend.
We’ll be doing a tour through some very varied parts of the south of the city and its outskirts, with a wee bit of climbing, but back in the city after 20 miles in time for lunch.

Ride southwards and upwards, Cathkin Braes, Sunday 03 April.

Yes, this month’s ride will be easy on the legs coming back, with an interesting tour on the way out to Cathkin Braes.
Andy, as usual, will be leading the ride and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Contraflow Cycling: Open letter to Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland

Glasgow City Council’s adoption of its new Active Travel Strategy is a great step towards making the city’s streets safe and inviting for vulnerable road users, and GoBike warmly welcomes it.

Adopting the strategy can only be a starting point. For years, the way Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland have dealt with proposals for contraflow cycling has made cycling less inviting as a travel choice.

Contraflow cycling (exempting cycles from one-way restrictions, see endnote) is safe.
