Sunday 02 October, cycle to Baldernock (where’s that?)

Baldernock Loop

Join us on Sunday and find out just where it is, and think back to the days of campaigning for the Bears Way!

This ride will head out into the countryside to the north of Glasgow, heading out via Woodside, Possilpark and Bishopbriggs to reach the canal at Cadder, before crossing the River Kelvin to Balmore. From Baldernock, we will continue to Milngavie, and ride the Bears Way path to Hillfoot. After that, we will continue on a mix of major and minor roads to reach the Garscube Estate and Forth & Clyde Canal around lunchtime.

20 miles, one unsealed path, some climbing in the Baldernock area, mostly on road, including Milngavie Road at the end of the Bears Way.

Meet 10am at the north end of Bell’s Bridge, Congress Road, Glasgow. See here for more information on our rides.

Langside monument

Pause to reflect.

As one event overshadows all others, the recent rush of consultations has stalled. Instead, some of Glasgow’s proposed Traffic Regulation Orders have been made permanent; including four Spaces for People projects.

Next month, consultation events begin for a trio of towns in East Renfrewshire (including the Williamwood area, which has a cycle lane petition).

Consultation Digest (National) Issue 14, 9 Sept 2022: The one after the Programme for Government.

The Scottish Parliament

Summer is over and government is back to work. As Liz Truss was flying back to London after meeting the Queen at Balmoral, Nicola Sturgeon stood up in the Scottish Parliament to unveil her new Programme for Government 2022-23. The cost of living crisis was the theme of the day but cycling priorities haven’t been forgotten.

Ruchill St map

Piling up.

As piles of rubbish are hopefully cleared up following the bin strikes, more council plans pile up about improving our streets. Some plans seem to overlap, like the South Central Local Development Framework and parts of the Liveable Neighbourhood for Langside to Toryglen. There’s no clear explanation about that from the city council (maybe worth asking if you respond to those consultations?). Also, some other LNs report back and there are projects like Ruchill St (in featured image, above).

The sheer volume of consultations coming out just now is getting difficult to keep on top of. It also affects how readable the Digest is (and how long it takes to produce).

So, there are changes in this issue – it no longer features every small Traffic Regulation Order as if it’s on a par with large projects covering whole/several neighbourhoods. Instead, the Digest will link to TROs on council websites and only feature notable ones (like the Riverside/Merchant City TRO, below under Glasgow City).

First GoBike ride of the autumn, Sunday 04 September, to Waterfoot and Thorntonhall.

dual carriageway by Thorntonhall

Yes, it will be September tomorrow, but let’s hope this good weather lasts until the weekend.
We’ll be doing a tour through some very varied parts of the south of the city and its outskirts, with a wee bit of climbing, but back in the city after 20 miles in time for lunch.

View of Castlemilk Dr

Meet at the north end of Bell’s Bridge for 10:00 on Sunday 03 September and see further details of this and forthcoming rides here.

Manse Rd, Bearsden Streetview

Not so fast.

As the right-wing press talk about speed limits for cyclists, this Digest has half a dozen items about trying to slow down drivers. Two of the traffic calming measures belatedly follow tragedies in East Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire.

Elsewhere, there’s a new area plan for Whiteinch and Scotstoun, to add to ones for the city centre, Woodside and Pollok. There are further traffic orders for East Ayrshire and across Glasgow.

There are also two drop-in events in the city centre this afternoon…

GoBike ride 07 August – our route

Here’s the up and downy route that Andy took us on last Sunday. The ride started, as per usual, at the north end of Bell’s Bridge and we cycled out via Bellahouston Park and Mosspark, skirted Neilston and arrived at Gleniffer Braes from where we had a superb view of the Clyde Valley to the west of the city, a good place for our break.

'Cycle Glasgow' map from Glasgow City Centre Transformation Plan

Putting it all together.

August opens with Cycle to Work Day and plenty of Traffic Orders from Glasgow, East Ayrshire and East Dunbartonshire. There’s analysis of the event for the eastern side of Argyle St, with accessibility issues raised again. Also, a major city centre plan being pushed by GCC (with several emails to GoBike). It has a few surprises which could help connect the city centre. (Tonight’s Digest was delayed by connection and commuting issues –apologies.)

George Square visualisation (option 1, view 3)

New shores, Southside and centre.

There’s a wee jaunt along the coast in this issue – taking in Port Glasgow, Greenock, Prestwick and Ayr. Also, a potential route from Paisley’s (dried up) canal to its town centre. In Glasgow there are Southside surveys and George Sq has gardens galore. Also, East Dunbartonshire Council update on some of their plans.

*Addition* Forthcoming consultations

Events about the ‘Argyle St East’ Avenue (Central Station to Barrowfield Park) are taking place early next week:
