'Cycle Glasgow' map from Glasgow City Centre Transformation Plan

Putting it all together.

August opens with Cycle to Work Day and plenty of Traffic Orders from Glasgow, East Ayrshire and East Dunbartonshire. There’s analysis of the event for the eastern side of Argyle St, with accessibility issues raised again. Also, a major city centre plan being pushed by GCC (with several emails to GoBike). It has a few surprises which could help connect the city centre. (Tonight’s Digest was delayed by connection and commuting issues –apologies.)

George Square visualisation (option 1, view 3)

New shores, Southside and centre.

There’s a wee jaunt along the coast in this issue – taking in Port Glasgow, Greenock, Prestwick and Ayr. Also, a potential route from Paisley’s (dried up) canal to its town centre. In Glasgow there are Southside surveys and George Sq has gardens galore. Also, East Dunbartonshire Council update on some of their plans.

*Addition* Forthcoming consultations

Events about the ‘Argyle St East’ Avenue (Central Station to Barrowfield Park) are taking place early next week:

Byres Rd plans at University Ave

Holiday time.

After a flurry of consultations since the local elections, things have slowed down for summer holidays. However, there’s an important Order to pave the way for protected bike lanes on Byres Road (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Elsewhere, the City Wharf pre-application closes soon. Consultations on East City Way and East Ren’s guidance are open for a bit longer. Greater Pollok still has months to go, which is handy since the map only has a dozen responses so far. Also, Greenock’s Spaces for People consultation is still open. Added: consultations for Ayr/Prestwick and Battlefield, Glasgow.

Consultation Digest (National) Issue 13, 1 July 2022: The one before the summer holidays.

The Scottish Parliament

Summer is here and the Scottish Parliament is now in recess. So time to kick back and enjoy a well deserved holiday away from all those consultations. But before that there’s one more consultation to respond to.

City Wharf site plan with street names

East End bikes, West End bus

This issue is split between a few East Renfrewshire consultations and one for the East City Way (by the velodrome, ahead of next year’s World Championships). There’s a consultation for ‘Greater Pollok’, in the south-west of Glasgow, and five ‘bus corridors’ on the western side of the city (no longer ‘Sustainable Transport Corridors’?).

Also, a new development is planned next to the shared path under the Kingston Bridge (see site plan in image, above). Plus feedback on moves to cap Charing Cross (or maybe even replace the city centre M8?).

A visualisation of the proposed A77 Active Corridor, Phase 2

All points East (Ren)

This Digest is dominated by consultations for East Renfrewshire. (The last issue should have included some of them too – apologies.) Five area consultations use Commonplace maps, similar to Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhoods (one of which is still open). Other East Ren projects are for a section of Ayr Rd (A77) and supporting documents for the council’s Local Development Plan 2 (LDP2). It’s almost as if ERC have some new active travel staff…

Elsewhere, Inverclyde still have a survey open on a Spaces for People route. Also, a consultation is due to open in June about a gap site by the Clyde…

Visualisation showing redevelopment phase 1, now up to 7 storeys

Building back up…

The Digest returns after an extended break for the local council elections (and some tech issues – apologies). The people in charge of a council have a big say in what gets done so it’s worth noting what has (and hasn’t) changed.

Glasgow City Council continues in minority SNP control, with added support from the Greens. However, Anna Richardson has stepped down from her Sustainability role. Instead, the convenor of the Environment, Sustainability and Carbon Reduction City Policy Committee is Elaine McSporran (Cardonald).

Elsewhere, many neighbouring councils have changed hands:

Plans for segregated cycletracks on Cornwall St/Churchill Ave, East Kilbride

Consultation resurrection?

Happy Easter! Things are a bit dead, before numbers rise again after the election, so it’s a chance to bring back consultations that slipped through the net in the last few months. The 12 local authorities in the Strathclyde area don’t always let us know what they’re up to!

This issue features East Ayrshire and West Dunbartonshire for the first time in a while. North Ayrshire and Inverclyde still have consultations open. Also, regulars like Glasgow, East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire. The latter had a consultation that fell between Digest issues (see featured image, above) and sent a new update on NCN74.

Also, ahead of the local elections, check out Walk, Wheel, Cycle, Vote and consider a trip to Edinburgh for Pedal on Parliament‘s new route on 23 April (just after Earth Day).

Low angle looking north on Victoria Road, Glasgow showing bike symbol painted on South City Way cycletrack

There’s less than a month until the local elections on 5 May and lots of ways to get involved. Call on your candidates and on politicians to support action for cycling – there’s a special roundup of election actions you can take at the end of this digest.

West St/Kingston St junction at Barclays campus with bike lights covered up

Is the coast clear?

A handful of Traffic Regulation Orders in Glasgow plus campus routes and a Liveable Neighbourhood up for consultation. Also, an update on bike lights bagged by the Barclays site. North Lanarkshire’s plan goes to government. Consultations on the coasts of North Ayrshire and Inverclyde.
